Scratchboard is one of my favourite mediums! I start with a solid black panel and scratch the surface with knives and other tools to expose the white clay beneath the black ink. Every mark is created by hand; different tools and pressure exerted on the tools create a variety of marks. As I’m scratching I pay close attention to variations in tone and value. Sometimes I add coloured inks but I love the clean look of black and white. Depending on the complexity and size of the piece, hundreds of hours can be spent on one piece of art.
